Websites and Web Applications - General Rules
Glossary of Terms
web applications - usually interactive tools accessible via a browser, used for handling matters, record-keeping, data registration, performing operations, etc.,
tool servers - machines that host services such as databases, API services, web applications, etc.,
informational websites - WWW pages with content (including text, tables, graphics, video, links, galleries, web forms, etc.) for viewing by recipients, usually maintained in page engines (CMS systems).
Website Addressing Policy
Informational websites related to topics significant for the entire University (or the cooperation of PG with other entities, etc.) are maintained within the main domain as subdirectories, e.g., pg.edu.pl/temat within the university's CMS Drupal page engine (in a specified graphic layout).
Informational pages dedicated to issues related to a specific faculty/center/institute, etc., are maintained in subdomains of those units using subdirectory forms, e.g., cm.pg.edu.pl/konkurs, ftims.pg.edu.pl/wydzial/konkurs-indeks .
Addresses in the form of subdomains (e.g., nazwa.pg.edu.pl, system.eia.pg.edu.pl) are primarily granted to: faculties, centers, systems, and IT portals.
Assignment of an address in the form of a subdomain (e.g., nazwa.pg.edu.pl, system.eia.pg.edu.pl) for an informational page, such as a conference or project, is an exception and requires obtaining consent. Applications should be submitted through the CUI Helpdesk. Pages for which consent has been obtained for a subdomain address should not be maintained in the university's graphic layout. For such pages, it is required to designate a person who will be responsible for the technical functionality of the site and who will independently manage the web server.
Graphic Layout of Websites
By default, informational pages are maintained in the university's CMS Drupal web page engine, which also provides the accepted graphic layout at the University. The functionality of the page engine is ensured by CUI PG.
Websites available in subdomains (for which prior consent for such addressing has been obtained) may have a different graphic layout than that adopted in CMS Drupal. Such websites are independently maintained by designated administrators. CUI can provide space on the server in the form of a virtual machine (VM), but the designated administrator is responsible for the administration of this machine (and the functionality of the website).
Hosting Location of Websites
By default, websites are maintained in the CMS Drupal page engine, and its functionality is ensured by CUI PG. CUI maintains the Drupal system on its servers.
Websites available in subdomains (for which prior consent for such addressing has been obtained) may be hosted:
on the server of the given organizational unit (in which case the unit provides CUI with the IP address of the server for which the appropriate record is placed in the DNS service) - the machine is administered by the unit's staff
ORon a virtual machine (VM), which CUI can provide - the machine is administered independently by the staff of the unit for which the website is maintained.
